The Enid Porter Room: the Museum’s tailor-made workshop space

Are you looking for a truly one-of-a-kind Museum experience for your students? At the Museum of Cambridge – the city’s independent social history museum, dedicated to telling the extraordinary stories of the ordinary people of Cambridge and the city itself – we are excited to welcome you into our versatile workshop space for a full day (or half-day) of immersive education as you become Curators for a day.

Workshop Structure

Begin the session with an introduction to museums, find out what it is we do and why, and become history detectives. Interrogate mystery objects from the Museum’s collection and ask important questions to discover what it is and why it is in our collection.

Then, students will get hands on with some more behind-the-scenes artefacts to find themes among the Museum’s collection and engage with a range of sources. Head into the Museum in small groups to learn more about displaying objects in museums and decide where to display their mystery objects.

If you choose a full day experience, after lunch students will continue to hone their curatorial skills, designing their very own temporary exhibition before pitching it to the class and to a member of Museum staff. Who knows, perhaps we’ll bring your ideas on board for a future exhibition!

Curriculum Links

Every aspect of this experience has been built with the KS2 and KS3 History curriculum in mind, particularly targeting the following points:

  • Noting connections, contrasts and trends over time to develop the appropriate use of historical terms.
  • Addressing and devising historically valid questions about change, cause, similarity and difference, and significance.
  • Understand how our knowledge of the past is constructed from a range of sources.
  • A local history study.
