This straw token was used by young Fenfolk to declare their love and to propose marriage. Two tokens would be made, each formed from three ears of corn tied together. With one token pinned to their sock, another would be given to their sweetheart at church on Sunday.
The following Sunday, if the recipient of the gift had their token pinned across their heart, it showed the feelings were mutual, or on their right, to let their hopeful lover down gently.
The token would then be worn until the couple were married. The wedding would happen before the ears of the corn shelled out!
