This formidable mechanical apple corer and peeler is an early example of kitchen gadgets designed to make a specific job quicker and more efficient. Made by S Nye and Co in the late 19th century, this ‘Senco’ type peeler and corer is believed to have once been in use at Clare College.
The hand-crank mechanism meant that cooks could quickly prepare large quantities of apples ready to be chopped and cooked. Made from heavy-duty steel the contraption could be screwed into the kitchen top meaning it could be worked with one hand. Its high-quality engineering and sturdiness have meant it has lasted for generations and helped make a lot of apple crumble!
